Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) |
The purpose of this page is to provide canned answers to some of the questions we regularly receive about the programs, so that we can refer people to this page rather than type it all out each time. Or, even better, hope they have visited here first and dont need to ask me! It is not designed to replace the instructions or the Help files, but more to amplify the reasoning behind some of the features/limitations in the programs.

General Questions
Question: I have already registered the program on another platform.. Do I have to register/pay again for the programs ?
Answer: We are afraid so. All these programs had to be written from scratch, often by different authors. and the only connection with the versions on other platforms is that they use the same name. We have tended to name the programs the same so that users changing platforms know what functionality and the type of program they are getting. Unfortunately we can't afford to give them away so you have to buy a new registration. So while we maintain our policy that upgrades are free, that applies only to that existing platform (To be technically correct we really mean the the existing Operating System, as you can use a 'Palm' code on ANY Palm platform, and a 'Windows Mobile' code on ANY PPC platform). Moving platforms (operating systems) means re-registering.
Question. I have downloaded the ZIP file - what do I do now ?
Answer : First I need to explain about "ZIP" files. The programs for your handheld actually consist of a number of files (24 in the case of RMRBank for the Psion), and it is not practical to distribute the program on the Web in that form. So what all authors do is use an Archive program such as RMRZip, PsiZip, WinZip, Stuffit.... to group all these files inside one 'umbrella' file, recognised by having a "ZIP" extension. As a bonus, these Archive programs also compress the data, so that the ZIP file is normally only 50% of the size of the other files combined. So, having downloaded a "ZIP" file you will need one of the programs mentioned so that you can Un-Archive (or UNZIP) the file. If you are working primarily with a Psion-platform then you can use RMRZip (note that, contrary to what I stated earlier, you can download the individual files from RMRZip), with an S3mx/c/a or Siena use PsiZip. With other handhelds you will need to first use a PC with WinZip or with a MAC using Stuffit. When you use these programs and load in the ZIP file they all open a window and display the files they contain. The majority of programs, and certainly all of mine, include a README.TXT file which you should extract and store somewhere and then read, either in a text editor or import into Word. That file will normally tell you how to install the program onto the handheld.
Question. How do I upgrade my older version and do I have to pay ?
Answer : All upgrades to the programs on the same type of machine are free to existing registered users and all you have to do is install the new version over the top of the older version in the normal way. All the data and the registration will be maintained through the process.
Question. Will RMRBank synchronise with Quicken/Microsoft Money ?
Answer : It depends on the definition of 'synchronise'. It will not a full automatic synchronise as you can do with a number of PDAs and Outlook, as we have never managed to get the specifications of the data files from Intuit or Microsoft. However, you can easily Export and Import transaction details between the programs so a manual synchronise is not difficult. Having said that, a lot of people tell us they stop using the PC program once they realise the power of RMRBank. However, if you are not sure, simply download a copy of the program and test it out. The Export/Import is fully implemented in the unregistered version.
Question. Will your programs be updated to run on new generation Symbian phones (SE P990, Nokia S60 (particularly E90)...) ?
Answer : I have now released S60 versions of some of the programs, but am not really satisfied with them. The only way I could do it was port the Palm versions across and use the Styletap Palm emulator. So the UI looks very old fashioned and clunky. Hopefully that will improve.
Pocket PC Questions
Question: I am getting an error after installing like : "Failed to create engine..", "no application", "cannot find forms data"
Answer: This is a bug in Pocket PC 2002. Download the VBRegFix program (courtesy of Newburyport Computer Associates, Inc) to your device, and run it.
Question: I am getting an error "RMRBank or one of it's components not found" on my non-English/USA computer.
Answer: Because of limitations with the Operating System the program has been 'hard-wired to run in \Program Files\RMRBank\, and the underlying Basic interpreter has to be in \Program Files\nsbasic\. Some non-English units load them into other directories, such as \Programme\RMRBank\ and \Programme\nsbasic\. If that is the case, create the new \Program Files\RMRBank\ and \Program Files\nsbasic\ folders and copy the contents across. (And replace the shortcut in \Windows\StartMenu\Programs\ so that it points at \Program Files\RMRBank\RMRBank.exe.
Question: I am getting an error like "Could not create non-visual control ('Grid') because IClassFactory could not be obtained, (err 800401f8) (gridctrl.gridctl.1 as accountsscreen, child id 12033) at 9000,60/238,210.
Answer: This is another bug in the PPC OS. If you install another program that uses the MSCEGrid.dll file then the Operating System can install it even if it is an older copy than the existing one. That causes the error. What is really annoying (but this is Microsoft after all so we shouldn't be surprised) is that if you then reinstall RMRBank the Operating System will not overwrite the dll file with the newer version. So the solution is to actually delete the MSCEGrid.dll file from the \Windows\ folder and then reinstall RMRBank so the newer file is installed.
Question: When I update an entry in RMRCar the time is reset to the present time.
Answer: This is a bug in the Operating System, in that the "Start time" and "Finish Time" dialog boxes cannot be pre-set to the times for the entry. Microsoft's fault I am afraid and nothing we can do about it.
Question: RMRDiet will not work on my new Pocket PC 2003 machine.
Answer: The problem is that Microsoft, in their wisdom, changed the database format between PPC 2002 and PPC 2003 (Don't you just love them !!) . You will get an error something like "ERROR: CeMountDBVol failed (183)". You need to download the "Database Conversion Wizard" from Microsoft and run it on your PC. You then run that conversion program (On the PC, with your handheld connected) and it will hunt out the RMRDiet database and convert it to PPC2003 format.
Question: Using the Icon on the Extras screen keeps creating a new screen (9210/9290)
Answer: We know!! For some reason the designers of the V6.0/6.1 interface thought that was better than the original system of opening the last-used file. We suggest you complain to Nokia. Meanwhile the way to work is to use the "Add to Desk" menu option from within the RMR program and then start launching the program from the Desktop screen instead.
Question: The program says that I need the OPL Runtime installed or the application cannot be started..
Answer: The programs need the OPL
runtime installed and this is included in the
ZIP file you downloaded. If you got the program from a third-party
site then it is probably not the latest version. Download the appropriate
version from here and install it.

Question: How do I transfer the program to a new/different computer ?
Answer: First, you need to install the program onto your new computer. Make sure it is the latest version, as many older versions are not compatible with the newer computers. Then you need to copy across the main data files (the ones with the icon for the associated program) from C:\Documents\ (or wherever you have put them). Then see if a folder C:\System\Apps\<...Program Name...>\Data\ exists (<...Program name..> is the name of the program, i.e. RMRBank). If so, transfer the contents. Finally move across the C:\System\Apps\<...Program Name...>\<...Program Name...>.ini file which contains your configuration settings and C:\System\Apps\<...Program Name...>\<...Program Name...>.reg which is your registration file. (Note that RMRBank is slightly different in that the files are called C:\System\Apps\RMRBank\Accounts.ini and C:\System\Apps\RMRBank\Accounts.reg.
Question. After installing I get an error message /system/opx/xxxxxxx.opx incompatible OPX version ?
Answer : This can happen for a variety of reasons. Basically the newer version of the OPX contained in the program hasn't overwritten an existing older version. This can happen if another program is open using the OPX, or another program has not followed the Symbian guidelines and has installed the original OPX without letting the Operating System know, so now you have two copies, one on C: and one on D: (You only need one copy but it doesn't matter which disk it resides on). The solution is to remove all copies of the OPX from C:/System/OPX/ and D:/System/OPX/ and then reinstall the program.
Question. After installing I get an error message xxxxxxx.opx not present.?
Answer : This is a bug in the Symbian installer. If you already have the OPX present it can uninstall it but then not reinstall it. Simply install the program again and the OPX should install.
Psion Money Compatibility
Question: Can I transfer my Psion Money data to RMRBank ?
Answer:
Yes. All you need to do is Export each account from Psion Money to a QIF file and then Import it into RMRBank. There is a special "switch" in the RMRBank Import dialog, called "From Program", and you need to select that to "Psion Money". The reason for this is that Psion Money implemented the QIF Import/Export in a rather odd way (in my opinion). Instead of using the "Payee/Description" field for the main description field of a transaction, they used the Memo field. This "Switch" will take this into account.
Question: Can I view all the transactions associated with a Budget Category ?
Answer:
Unfortunately not. You can view all the transactions in a selected Account for a given Budget Category, but not for every single Group/Account together. When I originally designed the program I had Budget Categories as very much a secondary, optional feature. Also, for data integrity purposes, I decided to save the data for each Account in a separate file. This has meant that doing any sort of analysis over every single transaction in every account is virtually impossible. In hindsight I perhaps could have designed it differently, but the program is now much too mature to even consider that level of redesign.
Question: Whenever I start/stop the program it flashes "You have outstanding warning transactions" ?
Answer:
The program thinks you have some transactions with the "Warning" attribute set. If you are sure you haven't, then reset the counter to zero through the Preferences menu.
Hope everyone finds this useful
